The reason is excercise is so beneficial to health is very numerous. Before I begin I want to talk a little bit about evolution. What is fascinating is that thousands and millions of years of evolution created the human body. Nowaday's food is everywhere and the cool thing is that our species is on top of the food chain so there is not many predators we have to fear, except for crazy people who want to kill many other people. Besides that horrible fact times are very good. The truth is that life is very good for many people.
That was not the case say even 50 years ago. Through time are great grandparents and ancestors had a lot more problems than many of us today, I hope do not have to deal with. To give you a few examples how about freezing to death, famine and getting eaten by a wild animal. Are ancestors had it much harder than many of us do.
Also remember many of our ancestors didn't have microwaves and refrigerators to help with storing and cooking they had to hunt for food everyday. They needed to walk for hours to forage for their meals, water and shelter. Imagine how hunting with a spear must of been, sprinting very hard at times to catch game while using many of their muscles just to survive.
This is what the human body is used to. With your body this is either growth or decay. Just look at cells right now many of them will replace other ones that will get destroyed. So I’m sure we all want more growth then decay right (say yes).
Think about this when you exercise you use muscles which consume calories (energy) that then sends a signal to the rest of your body that says, "hey we used a bunch of energy and we need some more over here." Because our bodies are survival machines we get more energy than we had last time. Think about when you lift weights you get stronger.
I'll admit I'm not the smartest person on the planet but to me that's a sign of growth. So to make it simple moderate exercise equal growth doing nothing equals decay.
Now of course it’s near impossible to live like we did in the past, which is why we should trick our bodies. Instead of holding a spear and sprinting to stab prey, we could jump on a treadmill machine. Also in substitute for building a small shelter made of sticks or mud we could just bench press and lift weights, you get the big picture.
I usually exercise 6-7 days a week for around 30-45 minutes a day. I mix in some weight training, sprinting and basic walking. No one program will fit every single person so I recommend to do what works for you, double check with you doctor and doing something is better than nothing.
